I'm writing my way through this—plunging headfirst into the history of bohemia, ambivalently resurfacing into a life that is my own fumbling attempt to enact some version of it. This newsletter intentionally blends the autobiographical and the philosophical to draw out some core ideas in bohemia and where they collide with modern life.
Some of these essays will inhabit an historical gaze: bohemia's promise and its shadow, where it flourished—from Paris to New York to California—the colorful characters who embodied its ideals, and why it continued to enchant generation after generation of restless minds. Others step into the present, documenting communities where the embers of this tradition still glow. Interwoven throughout, I'll share my own search for bohemia both within myself and around the world. I'm not writing from the other side of anything. I'm still searching.
There are many roads to bohemia, not all of them intellectual. This newsletter is a thinking laboratory for those who yearn for a life that feels creative and alive: encouragement for those on their way and inspiration for those on the brink.
